My deepest thank you to each and every one of your that took your precious time to fill out last week's survey. Allowing me behind the scenes of your pain is extremely insightful, and I want you to know that I'm truly grateful for the privilege.
The topic that seems to come up a lot is around dealing with chronic pain.
Chronic pain is just like that toxic relationship we've all had.
It was a great learning experience, a moment in time, but eventually you gotta move on and get back on track.
Yet, when chronic pain becomes a toxic relationship that continues on replay inside ourselves, well...walking away is not an option.
An entirely different approach is needed.
This "inside relationship" can manifest many different outcomes in our lives.
For example, a woman shared with me that she avoided training her abs after a c-section and umbilical hernia.
Turns out it had been 10 years since she had given birth...yet that old relationship + narrative of what she could and couldn't do was still playing out...
Anyways, this is a fantastic topic and I'd like to share with you a snippet of a conversation I was having with a good friend that was about this exact issue.
Because once your pain becomes your identity...that's when you're really in need of shift.
It's often said...
"Better the devil you know..."
So how can you support yourself when you're ready for deep + lasting change?
How do you make that stick for the long-term?
I've got some ideas. ;-)
After working with hundreds of women over 20 years, I've discovered something quite interesting...
RE-FRAME YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE MEANING BEHIND THE PAIN
The absolute first shift that needs to happen is that of perspective.
Why? Because it takes us out of fight or flight.
In order to begin to heal from the limitations that chronic pain brings, we have to create a new understanding of the meaning behind the pain.
From this place, new patterns both physical + emotional can begin to flourish.
Instead of striving for change, forcing a new habit, or shaming yourself into submission (to set or reach that new goal)....
We deconstruct what's "caged you up" and find the key to unlocking what you're really trying to do.
This looks like:
Physically assessing current movement patterns to establish baseline
Discovering any true physical limitations that are keeping you from reaching your goals Remember the woman who didn't train her abs even though it had been 10 years?)
Creating a pain tool kit (a must have) that outlines what trips you up + how to stay on track
Re-establishing a foundation for you to build on.
Just like toxic relationships (both internal + external)...it takes time + awareness to heal, but you don't have to do this alone.
If you've been struggling with :
Chronic pain
Feeling like you're "working against" your pain + limitations
Starting + stopping a workout routine due to re-injury
Fearful to begin again because "an old story" is holding you back
And you're really feeling like it's time to identify and shift the "I cant's" you need to know what's possible.
