Pilates killed my back!
This was her response when she found out that I teach Pilates to folks that are struggling with mild to severe injuries. I inquired a bit further and discovered that she had attended a few mat classes; which worsened her back pain.
The Pilates mat work is the heart and soul of the method. It’s by far the hardest work that exists in the entire system.
Group mat classes are a wonderful and affordable option to get more Pilates in your life; that is, once you know how to connect to your own body.
MAT WORK + APPARATUS = COMPLIMENTARY SYSTEM
One of the biggest challenges that new students face when starting a Pilates program is connecting to their center. Somewhere along the way, adults begin moving their limbs around their center, rather than through their center.
The Pilates method is a system of movement that consists of mat work as well as work on the apparatus. It was designed this way for a reason.
The mat work, and its required skill sets, are woven into the entire system.
A never ending interplay exists between the apparatus and the mat work. The different pieces of apparatus provide the body with assistance as well as a challenge, while the mat work builds strength and endurance to deepen one’s understanding when working on the apparatus.
It’s a constant conversation.
Additionally, mat exercises are meant to be taught a little at a time. This allows for the student to rise to the challenges that a mat class requires.
From this vantage point, it’s easy to see that easing into the mat work over a period of months v. dropping into a mat class as a newbie will yield different results.
PILATES MAT CLASS
When in a group class of any kind, it’s up to YOU to know how to govern yourself accordingly.
There’s simply too many people in any given class for the instructor to focus on one individual and provide specialized attention. That’s precisely what one-to-one coaching is for.
The purpose of a mat class is to enjoy a great work out. The instructor keeps the flow going, offering tidbits of valuable information that allows you to hone your skills.
The exception to this would be if the studio you attend offers a six week beginner program to a pre-select number of students, who are all at the same level. In a situation such as that, a proper foundation can be built. However, this is not what I’m referring to.
PRIVATE INSTRUCTION IS THE PREPARATION FOR MAT CLASS
Just as an interplay exists within the system of Pilates, the same is true about private and group lessons; one truly compliments the other.
The one-on-one experience allows the time and space to understand Pilates as well as the uniqueness of your own body. The group classes test your knowledge, skill level, and encourage autonomy. Joe Pilates was adamant about his students being independent.
When your Pilates practice expands and contracts in this way, the only thing getting killed will be your workout.
