I made an intentional decision to stop working out during quarantine (2020).
I know that seems like a strange choice for a person in my position, and to be honest, even I found it strange.
But this wasn’t my first rodeo regarding my ever-evolving relationship with my body, so I chose to trust my intuition and suspend exercising in 2020.
You see, for the first time in many years, I was quite content with my life.
My body was fit + lean
My business was healthy
My friendships were meaningful + long-lasting
Dynamo and I were (and still are) enjoying our honeymoon phase
As a bodyworker and a woman, I come back to my body over and over again to learn about myself, remember forgotten truths + wisdom within me, and reclaim myself from the shadow…
The shadow that society has placed upon all women to control and oppress our bodies, as well as propagate confusion by delivering conflicting messages about who we’re allowed to be.
So as it became clear that we’d be locking down for months...I stopped in my tracks when my first thought was, “Good, I can gain a few pounds and no one will know...I’ll lose the weight before we get back to life.”
I immediately realized that my desire to be “out from under the pressure” of being in shape, deserved some exploration…
WHY DO YOU WORK OUT?
Pretty quickly, I discovered what I was being asked to see…
Deep down in my core, my commitment to train, desire to care for my body, and the deeper why that was driving my practice was rooted in gaining :
Attention
Approval
Value
Love
When I met the ideal of how I was told to look (by daily messaging in society), I was rewarded with attention, love, higher perceived value, as well as praise for being “so perfect and meeting the standard”...you too?! I had a feeling. ;-)
My body’s innate wisdom was putting her foot down…
